Description of Election

The Situation

In southeast Texas, long time Congressman and Libertarian stalwart Ron Paul is resigning from his seat in the 14th district. Due to redistricting, the district's previous Republican guaranteed area of Galveston, south Houston, and all points west of that area has been moved slighlty east to noe encompass Galveston and the golden triangle area around Beaumont, Texas. This more Democratic area has made the race a little more interesting in the general election, but it is still likely to be a Republican stronghold.

The Candidates

Long time Congressman Nick Lampson is the sole competitor on hte Democratic side. Congressman Lampson was in office from 1996 to 2005 and then briefly again in 2007.

Nine Republican candidates are vying for the nomination to replace Congressman Paul. It does not appear that any single candidate will be running away with the nomination and winner will likely not obtain more than 35% of the vote. This is partly due to problems Texas had solidifying district lines and setting an election date, which has led to some difficulty in getting interest in the race.

Bill Sargent: A former enlisted man and naval officer, Bill Sargent has been involved in politics for a number of years, but never as an elected official. His conservative credentials go back to the Republican National Convention in 1964, and working for Barry Goldwater when he was a congressman. He has attended several forums and debates.

Felicia Harris: A former Pearland City Councilwoman and attorney, Mrs Harris has been in the race for several months and participated in most forums and debates.

Randy Weber: The owner of a local air and heating company, Mr Weber was elected to the Texas State Legislature in 2008 after serving on the Pearland City Council from 1990-2006. He has also participated in most forums and debates.

Robert Gonzalez: An activist with the TEA Party, Mr Gonzalez is chairman of the board for the Clear Lake TEA Party. He is an engineer at Occidental Chemicals making his first attempt at political office.
