Russ Feingold on Israel

Summary

In 2008, Senator Feingold noted the 60th anniversary of the founding of Israel and stated that he supported a two state solution. In 2009, Senator Feingold stated that Israel had a right to defend itself from rocket attacks launched from Gaza. However, he stated that an incursion into Gaza could lead to more violence.

 

60th Anniversary Comments

In May of 2008, Senator Feingold issued a press statement commemorating the 60th anniversary of the creation of Israel. He states that Israel and the US have a unique relationship.

I am pleased to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the modern state of Israel. On this momentous occasion, we celebrate a vibrant nation that has thrived since its founding in 1948 under the most difficult circumstances. Founded in the aftermath of the Holocaust as a home for Jews around the world, Israel continues to be a beacon, and a rare outpost of freedom and democracy in a region that knows too little of either. As we take the time to acknowledge the importance of this anniversary, we should also remember those who lost their lives in the fighting that coincided with the birth of this nation. Few, if any nations, have had such difficult births and have overcome such tremendous challenges.

As we celebrate the anniversary of one of our strongest allies, the struggle for peace and stability throughout the Middle East continues. Peace-making in this region is no easy task but we need to nurture the progress developed during the Annapolis Summit and keep working toward a two-state solution that resolves the decades of turmoil Israel and its neighbors have endured. I am hopeful that through a continuing dialogue and diligent efforts, we will see a breakthrough that improves trust and cooperation between all actors and provides a framework for a lasting peace.

The U.S. and Israel have a unique relationship that both Americans and Israelis cherish. Today, we should celebrate that relationship, which is as strong and deep as ever.

 

Response to Hamas Missile Attacks

In January of 2009, Senator Feingold issued a press statement noting the actions of Israel in response to rocket attacks from Hamas. He notes that they have a right to defend themselves, but that the incursion into Gaza may elicit a response from Hamas.

"No country should tolerate terrorism and Israel has every right to protect its citizens from Hamas missile attacks. But I am concerned that the military operations in Gaza could backfire and lead to more violence. In addition, every effort must be made to allow innocent civilians in Gaza to receive humanitarian assistance. I hope a ceasefire can be reached as soon as possible so that serious progress can be made toward a two-state solution. To achieve that, there must be sustained diplomatic efforts including the appointment of a high-level U.S. official to work on this issue every day until a resolution can be reached.”

Urges President Bush to consider appointing as Special Envoy for Middle East Peace an individual who has held cabinet rank or someone equally qualified with an extensive knowledge of foreign affairs and the Middle East region in particular.
