TERM LIMITS FOR CONGRESS
The Pre-amble of the US Constitution states:
“We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the blessings of Liberty for ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
It is too bad that too many politicians look at these words, but see the following:
“We the Congress of the United States, in order to protect our membership, establish self preservation, insure our re-election, provide for raising campaign funds, fool the general public, and secure the blessings of our party leadership for our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
Unfortunately, that is what they do. Once one is elected to Congress, they intend to make it a career. Our Founding Fathers never intended for our representatives to be career politicians, for good reason. Once they are entrenched, they can forget why they were initially elected, and the corruption starts. They pass laws, which they never intend to apply to themselves, and even have the audacity to openly exempt themselves from some of the laws they apply to the “rabble”.
If every member of Congress knew they would only serve for a limited period, and then be forced to experience the garbage they create, our country would be better served. Therefore, their terms must be limited and I suggest the following:
The highest office in our Government is the President who can only serve 8 years, so “lower” offices should serve for a shorter period. A Senator should only serve 6 years, and a Representative to the House should serve no more than 4 years.
This will take an Amendment to the Constitution, so I suggest we begin this process immediately.
