Jesse Jackson and his ledger of rights

Jesse Jackson Jr (D IL-2) held a town hall to discuss health care on August 19, 2009. After a short speech he began to answer questions from the audience.  After a few questions concerning exactly what would be covered in some of the proposed plans, a question was raised which broached the issue that health care was a service which had to be provided by someone and must therefore be paid for by someone.  The phrase used to describe health care was that it was a "commodity".

Representative Jackson's response to this question was that health care was a right, and that rights had to be fought for to be realized.  He then spoke about a "ledger" of civil rights, and said that if "they" believe that ownership of guns is a right, then perhaps "we" should get health care in some manner of trade to balance the "ledger".

This response seems to demonstrate a level of thought in items related to the constitution and civil rights which borders on that of a young child.  Representative Jackson is stating that he is willing to acknowledge civil rights clearly outlined in the constitution if "we" are willing to balance that right with the granting of free health care.  How considerate of Representative Jackson. He doesn't like the rules, so he wants to negotiate new ones.
