Last Updated: Nov 29, 2011

Summary

On November 28, 2011 Herman Cain appeared on CNN with Wolf Blitzer to discuss a scandal that was about to erupt. Mr Cain stated that a long time acquaintance of his was about to claim that the two had been carrying out a long term affair. He flatly denied that accusation, but admitted that he did indeed know the woman and claimed that she was a friend whom he was helping.

Later that day, an interview with Ginger White was aired on a local Fox News station in Atlanta. In that interview, Mrs White did indeed claim that she met Herman Cain in the late 1990's and that the two had been having a physical relationship that stretched over the last 13 years. She stated that after meeting Herman Cain after a speech, he invited her to his hotel room where he asked to see her again. From there on, she would sometimes meet Mr Cain when he would travel for business.

As proof of their relationship, Mrs White produced phone records with calls from a number she claimed was Herman Cain's. Some of the calls were at late at night or early in the morning. When the news company called the number, Herman Cain answered.

Mrs White also stated that she did not originally want her affair with Mr Cain public, but the press had already discovered the story and she wanted to get out ahead of it. The local Fox affiliate discovered that Mrs White had numerous evictions in her past with one as recently as six months ago. A lawsuit had also been won against her for libel and she had previously sued an employer for sexual harassment.

Mr Cain's lawyer wrote a letter to the news company which did not deny the claim, but insisted that the claim of an affair was personal in nature in not the same as the previous claims of harassment. They asked that the matter not be discussed.

Accuser Interview

On November 28, 2011 an Atlanta, Georgia woman was interviewed by Fox 5 News - a local Fox News affiliate. In that interview, she made the allegations that Herman Cain alluded to on CNN. According to the interview, Ginger White met Herman Cain in Louisville, Kentucky in the late 1990's when he invited her to drinks and to his room after a speech she attended. In his room he told her that he wanted to see her again and made arrangements to see her during travel events. Mrs White stated that she was aware that the relationship was inappropriate and ended when Herman Cain announced his run for the Presidency.

As proof of the relationship, Mrs White produced cell phone records with a number that she claimed was Herman Cain's. The records showed calls in the evening and the morning from that number. The news agency texted that number and Herman Cain responded and denied the allegations, confirming the number.

The news agency found numerous evictions in Mrs White's past, a libel suit against her that was won, and she previously filed a harassment claim.

After a speech, they shared drinks afterwards and he invited her back to his hotel room.

She stated that in his hotel room, he pulled out a calendar and invited her to meet him in Palm Springs. She accepted, and she says the affair began.

She stated that Herman Cain gave her his newly-published book, Leadership is Common Sense, and he wrote: “Miss G, you have already made a 'big difference!’ Stay focused as you pursue your next destination."

When asked about why she came forward, she stated that a friend had tipped news agencies and that she wanted to get her story out before the media had a field day with it. She also stated that she felt bad for the woman who had filed sexual harassment claims because of the way the media treated them.

Cain Response

That same day - November 28, 2011 Herman Cain's lawyer sent a letter to the television station doing the interview with Mrs White. The wording of the letter is not as definitive as Herman Cain's denial on air. The statement simply asserts that the accusation is not one of harassment and is a private matter.
