Joe Sestak on Abortion

Last Updated : Jun 28, 2010

Congressman Sestak is pro-choice.  While his voting record on the issue is small due to his recent election and the dominance of other issues since that time, he has voiced a strong pro-choice stance and has consistently received the financial and verbal support of pro-choice groups.  NARAL endorsed Congressman Sestak in the 2010 Senate primary race due to his opponents support for a partial-birth abortion ban.

NARAL Backing

In May of 2010, NARAL Pro-Choice America announced that it would be backing Congressman Sestak in the Democratic Senate primary over incumbent Senator Arlen Specter.  NARAL is one of the leading groups in the country which advocate for more abortion rights for women.  The group also contributed $5,000 to Congressman Sestak's primary campaign.  In endorsing Congressman Sestak, NARAL president Nancy Keenan said the following:

Keenan also stated that Specter has a mixed record on abortion rights. She pointed out that Specter supported George W. Bush's partial-birth abortion ban and, as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, "he was a close ally and partner of the Bush administration in helping secure confirmation for several anti-choice judges," according to NARAL.

In Sestak's first successful campaign against an anti-choice incumbent in 2006, NARAL Pro-Choice America spent $232,000 on independent expenditures, including voter identification, polling, persuasion mail pieces, GOTV mail, online alerts, and phone calls, reaching 86,000 households. The NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC contributed $10,000 to Sestak's 2006 campaign and $2,500 to his re-election bid in 2008. (Text taken from source)
