National Security

As we learned on Christmas 2009, the war on terror is real. It will be long and protracted, but it must be fought and it must be won. We must continue to be ever vigilant both here at home and overseas.

Keeping our citizens safe will be one of my top priorities. That means depending on military, not political leaders, for strategy. It means that we must fight the war without artificial measuring sticks. And it means treating our enemies as enemies – not as Americans with constitutional rights. I wholeheartedly oppose the prosecution of terrorists in civilian courts.

No country on the planet has ever spilled as much blood of its young on foreign soil for the cause of freedom as has the United States. America’s military is a microcosm of its society at large, and the fact that America’s young are willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom and liberty is a testimony to the heartbeat of America. We must support our troops while they’re being recruited, while they’re on active duty, and once they become veterans. That means honoring their commitment by compensating them with quality health care, educational opportunities and benefits.

Arrest and Detention of US Citizens

In December of 2011, the House voted on the Defense appropriations act for 2012 - HR 1540. Part of that legislation was a provision to express the authorization of the military to arrest and indefinitely detain US citizens. The only requirement for this was that the person be suspected of allying with al-Qaida. The legislation passed 283-136. Bill Johnson voted in favor of the legislation.
