Newt Gingrich - The Stimulus

Summary

Congressman Gingrich strongly opposed President Obama's 2009 stimulus plan. Prior to plan being enacted, he referred to the legislation as the generational indebtedness plan. Days later, he appeared on the O'Reilly Factor and stated that the content of the legislation was not stimulative in nature and that it was merely a payback to Democratic constituents.

Days before the legislation passed, Congressman Gingrich said that he did support measures within the stimulus to create electronic health records, and fund Medicare. He also stated that Americans could go up to six months without paying taxes for the same amount of money as the stimulus.

 

Generation Indebtedness Plan

On January 28, 2009 Congressman Gingrich spoke in Kentucky about President Obama's proposed stimulus plan. He refers to the proposed package as the generational indebtedness act.

 

O'Reilly Appearance

On February 2, 2009 Congressman Gingrich appeared on the O'Reilly show and spoke about the content of the stimulus package. He noted that only a small amount of package was stimulative in nature and that most of it was a payback to the groups that got President Obama elected.

 

American Solutions Video

On February 4, 2009 Congressman Gingrich made a video for American Solutions discussing the size of the proposed stimulus packages. He notes that the US population could be given a great length of time without paying taxes for the same amount.

 

Two Good Things

In February of 2009, Congressman Gingrich released a video in which he stated that there were two good things in the stimulus bill. One of those items was an investment in electronic health records, and the second was funding for medicare.

 

This Week Appearance - Allow them to Fail

Congressman Gingrich appeared on This Week in February of 2009 and compared the proposed stimulus to yet another bailout. He stated that people who fail should be allowed to fail.
