Summary

Congresswoman Giffords has stated that the war in Afghanistan is a difficult but worthwhile war. When President Obama announced that he was sending a surge of troops to Afghanistan, Congresswoman Giffords professed tepid support and stated that while the president laid before the nation a realistic assessment of the challenges ahead, it is ultimately the Afghan people who must assume responsibility for their country.

In March of 2011, the House voted on a resolution to require the removal of troops from Afghanistan pursuant to the War Powers Resolution. The measure failed 96-321. Gabrielle Giffords cast a "No Vote"
