Gabrielle Giffords on Social Security

Last Updated : Jan 27, 2011

Summary

Congresswoman Giffords opposes the privatization of social security. She referred to it as a gamble in a campaign ad and falsely characterized it as putting money into the stock marker to benefit the wealthy. She also opposes raising the retirement age for social security. She stated that any increase in the retirement age will place a greater burden on older workers in physically demanding occupations, such as nurses, auto workers and teachers, who may not be able to continue to work in their jobs into their mid- to late-60s

Press Statement - Retirement Age

In September of 2010, Congresswoman Giffords introduced a resolution to ensure that the retirement age for social security was not raised. She stated that doing so was tantamount to decreasing benefits.
