Gabrielle Giffords on Immigration

Last Updated : Jan 27, 2011

Summary

Congresswoman Giffords supports amnesty for illegal aliens. As the representative of a border district, immigration has been a central topic in Congresswoman Giffords' time in office. Congresswoman Giffords has been vocal in her stance that the border should be secured and that amnesty should not be granted. She has called for and supported the use of the National Guard on the border, and has stated that the federal government must address the issue of illegal immigration.

Unfortunately, Congresswoman Giffords statements that she opposes amnesty are in stark contrast to other statements that she has made, and counter to legislation that she supports. In addition to referring to illegal aliens as "undocumented immigrants", Congresswoman Giffords has stated that when any reform is passed, those who have broken laws should not be granted citizenship. This asserts a belief that US immigration laws and resulting violations of workplace and driving laws are not valid when determining a crime. Congresswoman Giffords has also been a vocal supporter of the DREAM Act and Comprehensive Immigration Reform, both pieces of legislation designed to grant citizenship (amnesty) to illegal aliens.

Congresswoman Giffords also opposed Arizona's attempts to stop illegal immigration through SB1070. She was critical of the Obama administration lawsuits and stated that neither the lawsuit nor the law did anything to stop illegal immigration.
