New York Times profile

In a March 2010 profile by the New York Times which is shown on the Bill Brady campaign website, Bill Brady is stated to be against abortions.

Besides trying to raise money, Mr. Brady — a social conservative who opposes abortion and civil unions for same-sex couples — faces the task of winning the affection of metropolitan Republicans and swing voters who have tended to prefer moderates in statewide Illinois races.

“In any other year,” said Don Rose, who has worked as a consultant for Democratic and Republican candidates, “it would be an absolute impossibility for a candidate like Brady.”

But with the wrenching unemployment rate, an angry electorate and the coming corruption trial of Rod R. Blagojevich, the former Democratic governor, this is no ordinary year.

The best strategy for Mr. Brady, some Republican insiders say, is to introduce himself to voters in Chicago and the suburbs, decry the sorry state of the economy — and talk as little as possible about his conservative social stands. He opposes abortion even in cases of rape and incest — but not if the pregnant woman’s life is endangered. He believes Illinois should legalize the carrying of concealed firearms.
