Jerry Brown on Education

Last Updated : Sep 10, 2010

Governor Brown's plan for education addresses the following areas:

  • Higher Education
  • Overhaul State Testing Programs
  • Change school funding formulas and consolidate most of the 62 existing categorical programs
  • Teacher Recruitment and Training
  • Simplify the Education Code and Return more decision-making to local school districts
  • A More Balanced and Creative School Curriculum
  • Place special emphasis on teaching Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM)
  • Increase Proficiency in English
  • Improve High School Graduation Rates
  • Charter Schools
  • Magnet or Theme Schools
  • Citizenship and Character

Overall, the plan seems difficult to implement and understand effectively. There are few deliverables and at times, the plan seems to contradict itself as one bullet notes the need for increased emphasis on math and science and the other cites the need for a broader education with a new definition of what an educated person means.
