Perry Drops Out

Jan 19, 2012 - NEWS
Governor Rick Perry is expected to announce today that he is dropping out of the race for the Presidency. While that isn't too surprising considering Perry's poor performance in the Iowa and New Hampshire elections, the timing of just two days before the South Carolina primary and hours before a debate is a little unorthodox.
Multiple sources are stating that perry is expected to throw his support behind former Speaker Newt Gingrich. This is a little unexpected given that Perry was courting the same set of social conservatives that Senator Santorum is seeking. Obviously, one can't tell where the support of the 6% that was polling as supporting Governor Perry will go, but if a large percentage goes to Gingrich it will be enough to win the state of South Carolina for him.
With a four man debate now scheduled for tonight and an interview with one of Speaker Gingrich's former wives airing on television a day before the election, predicting the South Carolina primary will be difficult. After being in the state for a couple of days, we can say that the Perry people have been very active. There are signs along most highways for him, and Perry supporters have been at the events of other candidates holding signs and waving to those that passed by. This includes Speaker Gingrich's events. It is possible that those people will just stay home now that their candidate has dropped out.
