39th Anniversary of Roe vs Wade

Jan 24, 2012 - NEWS
On January 22, 2012 the White House issued a press statement noting the 39th anniversary of the Roe vs Wade decision that effectively made abortion legal in the US.  President Obama's pro-choice credentials were never in doubt. Although no major legislation concerning abortion was voted on in his time in the Senate, he has been vocally supportive of pro-choice policies for his entire time in politics.
However, the press statement goes beyong merely acknowledging the anniversary of the decision. The statement also asserts that abortion is a private family matter that government should not intrude into, that abortion is a fundamental constitutional right, and that access to abortions ensures that our daughters have the same rights, freedoms, and opportunities as our sons to fulfill their dreams.

Statement by the President on Roe v. Wade Anniversary
As we mark the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we must remember that this Supreme Court decision not only protects a woman’s health and reproductive freedom, but also affirms a broader principle: that government should not intrude on private family matters. I remain committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose and this fundamental constitutional right. While this is a sensitive and often divisive issue- no matter what our views, we must stay united in our determination to prevent unintended pregnancies, support pregnant woman and mothers, reduce the need for abortion, encourage healthy relationships, and promote adoption. And as we remember this historic anniversary, we must also continue our efforts to ensure that our daughters have the same rights, freedoms, and opportunities as our sons to fulfill their dreams.
