On April 21, 2012 the Utah GOP selected Chris Stewart as their candidate over a field of almost a dozen candidates. That selection created a controversy for Mr Stewart as he and another candidate accused others in the field of a false attack letter. Those candidates returned the accusation by stating that the entire event was staged to garner support for Mr Stewart. The Democratic party selected Jay Seegmiller as their candidate, meaning there is no true primary on either side.
